  1. What is Kartini’s Day?

Kartini’s day is held every April 21, it’s the birthdate of Raden Adjeng Kartini. Kartini’s day was celebrated after 1964. Presidential Decree of the Republic of Indonesia No. 108 of 1964 in that decision, Raden Adjeng Kartini was also designated as a hero of national independence.

  1. History of R.A. Kartini

Kartini or as also we known Raden Adjeng Kartini was born on April 21, 1879. Kartini was born into a wealthy and powerfull family, she is the daughter of the regent of Jepara named Raden Mas Adipati Ario Sosroningrat with MA Ngasirah. Kartini’s grandfather, Pangeran Ario Tjondronegoro IV, was known in the mid-19th century as one of the first regents to give his children Western education. Raden Adjeng Kartini is a pioneer in the revival of women in Indonesia, especially the indigenous people. When she was 12 years old, Kartini was allowed to attend ELS (Europese Lagere School) where Kartini studied in Dutch. The first book of Raden Adjeng Kartini is “Habis Gelap, Terbitlah Terang” was published in 1911.

The Kartini’s day celebration purpose to celebrate and honor Kartini’s struggle as a hero of national independence. This celebration should contain a deep meaning regarding the emancipation of women and remind all of Indonesian to continue and consistenly fight for gender justice and gender equality.
